This personal essay explores the intensity with which identity is tied to music, and the gatekeeping that often arises around “lesser-known” artists. In an algorithm-driven world, discovery is diluted into endless personalized playlists for every mood or ambience. “When we notice how not-so-unique our algorithmically created playlists are, our individuality is threatened.”
The organic nature of discovering music is increasingly altered. Historically, the link between personality and what we listen to has always carried deeper meanings, tied to identity construction and social distinction.
“The constant pursuit of uniqueness can be excruciating — yet accepting the democratization of music and the abundance of new artists emerging should be something we embrace. Music brings people together, creates communities, and continues to serve as a driving force in identity formation.”
